I have been wondering, if so much work has been done on 1.3 already, why not just release the beta version? I am sure that no one will complain about it (even if it does crash all the time) as long as they get to play it.

Because we arent like EA.

Its just not ready for a release yet, but almost.

We are waiting for an SDK update as well to fix a lot of issues.

The fixes are really just to smoothen out the MP, but Valve aren't willing to give us a good SDK update so its possible we will never see it.

Then we shouldnt rely on that and of course not make the 1.3 release dependent on that sdk update.

A new SDK update has been released. Is that the one you want?

as far as i know this was only a steam client update.
