OC Executable causing instability in everything.

Post by Panda X »

So a friend and I wanted to play OC again so we downloaded. Firefox for him and I crashed when it finished downloading, his was corrupt so he redownloaded it in Chrome, which also crashed when finishing the download. Explorer then hung on both of us trying to do anything with the file, rename, copy, delete, run, etc. Luckily for me it eventually ran but for him it took a good 30 minutes before the installer ran which drug his system to a near halt forcing a reboot. The fact that this both happened to us at the same time was the reason I posted this, if it was just one I wouldn't worry.

We both use Windows 7 Ultimate Build 7600.

Are you using Wireless?

If so, get an Ethernet cable and plug it in.

If it was on my side then why would the same exact symptoms show with two people, one twice?

Also are you on x86 or x64? We both are on x64.

No. And you don't need to add emphasis on ethernet, I know what it is.

Because it doesnt happen to anyone else?
Besides, installers can take a lot of resources while they run, since they have to extract and copy a lot of compressed files in order to install the mod.
Dont blame us for it.

Edit:
x64.

Not when it runs. It's when it's done downloading and/or handled in explorer. Once it's running it's fine.

I downloaded it again on another computer, sure enough:

Explorer also hung again but I didn't get a screen.

That's normal. When a download finishes it copies from your internet temp folder to your specified download location. When this happens the Firefox/IE will become unresponsive, you just have to wait it out. Firefox also virus scans their downloads too, this can add extra waiting time. Just be patient, get a drink or snack and come back in like 5 minutes or so

It only happens on this one file. Also I have the virus scanner disabled.

firefox always does it, but normally the files aren't big enough / don't contain high compressed data to let you see that it does that every time, just wait... (the installer actually is about 3x bigger without the compression so you can guess how much a scanner must do in order to scan that file)

Going off what Neico said, you should temporarily disable your scanner if it is creating a time-sink.
Plus, if you are using Windows 7, I'd recommend getting any latest patches.
I myself can run OC just fine and I use Vista Home Premium.
I usually run from rockets.
Pretty straightforward.

Going off what I said earlier the scanner is disabled. This is the only file to ever do this. And I've had 1GB+ archived installer files and this never happens. Just the one very lone file.

Erm, I think I've seen you playing on an OC server, when I was browsing the other day?

All I can say is there are sooo many factors contributing to why an executable of a large file may take time to open. If you now have it open, then no problemo.

If not get an older version of the mod, and patch it up. with the use of the smaller files.

Doubt it, I've been playing though HL's storyline in coop again with a friend.

Like I said, this is the only file. I've got 1,2,3GB+ files that open/manage instantly. There's no reason why this ONE, only one, ever, file should bring my system, my spare system, and my friend's system to a slow halt.
