prefab request

hi, i'm an experienced mapper who has recently been made aware of this great mod :D, really have filled the void for a while. Anyway, i particularly like playing Harvest with some of my TF2 clan members, and because i like the way the map works and plays I wanted to try my hand at making a similar map.

so... I would like to learn how to make this kind of map, but after some time of searching the internet, but mainly these forums, i've given up hope of finding any kind of tutorial for it, i've even been trying that "wiki.neic0.de" link i've seen posted around here a few times, but whenever i've tried it, it says page error and can't be displayed etc.

However, i do rrecall, over the course of my travels, seeing shifty say something about requesting a prefab for making a map of this type. don't remember where he said that, but meh, thought i'd post this request for a Harvest Prefab so i can basically learn how stuff works and make my own variation of harvest, which hopefully expands on the concept through my own mapping ideas :D.

anyway, here's hoping to a responce in my favor :D

I believe what you are referring to regarding me and the stated prefab was about asking the maker of the map, Tysn, for a money prefab.

You say you are experienced, so I feel that your best bet would be to decompile the map and see how it works. The only other option would be to contact Tysn and have a Q&A.

Yes, contact tysn or just wait till he sees this thread, but i can tell you already that he wont be happy that theres going to be yet another harvest map.

And to tell you the truth, im not happy about this either, i would rather see some more good worth playing coop maps than just another harvest/fishing map.

yup shiftey, was refering to that since you refreshed my memory of it :D

anywaym tried decompiling, but i'm very opposed to doing that kinda thing wiothout permission from the original mapper, and thus never done it before. for some reason it wouldn't work when i tried ot though as a last resort. no idea what was wrong, so i got someone else i know to try it, and that didn't work :(. I used vmex, but can anyone recormend an alternative that simple to setup/use? or do it for me ;)

also, nah won't be a harvest map in the traditional sense. i'm happy playing oc_harvest with people i know and i've no need to make a clone of something we enjoy playing for a fair few hours at a time, personally i consider that a waste of my time, and when i get like that i never follow throuigh finishing the map :(. What i have planned would use the harvest mechanics at it's core but esentially be something else. I'd mainly be using the prefab to learn how stuff works so i can attempt to make something that is a development of harvest.

i don't see it as the end of the world if i can't get what i'm after here, this is just something i'd like to spend my free time doing ;). After making this map i may attempt to convert a few maps from my mod into coop maps here, as the maps would translate well into coop, but it's not the same gameplay style, so would need to construct something to learn how to map in the oc style ;)

I agree, too much harvest maps and less coop maps would make the mod boring

but surely a map that encourages someone to map for your mod outweighs the style of map that it is

less mappers = less maps = less mod content

I think its a lot simpler then you are imagining. Use a prop_physics of money, Output "OnUse money_add Add 1" && "OnUse !self Kill".

Then find an entity that is named something like ent_score or game_score, name it money_add and set up whatever settings that may need tweaking.

When a player picks up the money, it will add +1 to his score and then disappear. Just look around the net or gmod website for a model of money and you're set.

As for the harvest mechanics, although I highly respect Tysn and think his maps are some of the best out there, what he does is not rocket science and can be recreated fairly simply with a little brain power and ingenuity.

Good luck! If you still want to, you can ask Tysn for the prefab, since he's the only person that will have it.

I think pretty much of the stuff in harvest is done with logic_relays and point_templates. The plants for example: To me it seems the piece of dug earth is a func_brush, then the plants models (prop_dynamic_override or something) are moved up a bit every day, maybe via func_move_linear (or whatever it's called) or func_tracktrain.
Just to provide some kind of impulse for you. If you're experienced, then it won't be this much of a problem to set something like this up and once you have it up and running, you can just copy-paste and change it according to your needs.

Well, everything i tell you is just a guess, but you could just ask Tysn or sven666 (the maker of oc_paysan, who also got help by Tysn, i think)

ty shiftey and blues. i think that info will get me started and is probably all i need. like i said previously, i'm an experienced mapper, though thats not to say i've made maps for all different kinds of mods, and so obviously i'm not going to learn something i didn't know existed :D. Before playing this mod i've not really come across money type of systems and buying items etc, but from what i can see from what you both said (but mainly shiftey ;)) i'll be able to get started with doing stuff.

The money model is also included with the game afaik, or it's part of a game that i mounted when i used that sdk program thing i found here. so don't need to get that.

I also found a program called crafty... well i've had it a while, but didn't know you could export maps as vmf files with it. It removes all brush work though, and brush based entities :( so makes it hard to explore the map, though i can see the entities and how they are setup in relation to each other. Not as good as a prefab though, cos it just dumps everything in there, with no brushes to guide you.

Without the brush based entities as well, it's hard to work out how stuff like the day/night system works. never had to do something like that so i'm a bit clueless on it atm, so if anyone could shed light on how that is setup, i'd be greatful.... though tbh, my map would work without that, well, the whole dying at night thing, but would like to know how it works. i guess it has something to do with brush based hurt entities being turned on when some kind of fade to black thing happens. i doubt thats mod specific though, so if no one explains it, i'll live :D

anyway, ty for the help, like i say, i can probably get by with what i need now, but if Tysn or anyone wants to share a prefab with me, that would be highly apprecaited. ty
