Left 4 Dead mob scream in Half Life?

Post by Mr. Someguy »

So I was Half Life the other day, and while going through the On-A-Rail chapter, I stopped at a platform to see what could be found (supplies, vortigaunts, marines, etc). Well I doubt anyone remembers this part. But there are 2 silos next to each other, one has some dead soldiers, skeletons, and some ammo. The other contains a rocket, with a shotgun soldier and a massive number of headcrabs that drop down through shafts in the side of the silo.

Anyway, I was just walking along enjoying the game. I turn to head into the silo and suddenly out of no-where I hear a familiar, yet very out of place sound. The mob-yell from Left 4 Dead. It just came out of nowhere, totally unexpected. It didn't fit in with the atmosphere at all either. I half expected a horde of angry virus infected humans to charge at me (but they didn't).

I don't know why I'm telling you this as you probably don't care but whatever. Anyway for those interested the sound can be found here:

That explains the sound's crappy quality...
WIPs: CTF_Dustbowl for TF2. Or it would be if the files weren't messed up.

Valve recycles everything.

Especially in L4D, where they randomly decided to also reduce texture quality.

I didn't realize that the shotgun sounds we're from TF2 until someone mentioned it on FP.

Plus, the mounted gun sounds are also Sasha's sounds with pitch shifting.

Oh wow, didnt notice that either.
And if i remember right, the soldiers rocket launcher uses the headcrab canister launching sound when firing, or at least used, noticed that long time ago when i played tf2 for the first time with neico few days after orange box was released.

To think of how many people you can fool just by modifying the pitch a little. God damn lazy ass Valve.

Well, how hard is it to make a new sound?
It's just easier to take an existing sound, and modify it.
Examples:
In HL2, the Fast Zombie's scream is a Howie Scream that's sped up, had the pitch raised, and has been cut off.
On FPSB, some of Trappa's sounds are rehashed sounds, or ones made in a sort of Coconut Effect-type way, or are just existing sounds made as replacements. (That isn't to say they're bad.)
I usually run from rockets.
Pretty straightforward.
